BUSH’S IMMIGRATION PLAN NOT A
LONG-TERM SOLUTION
Louisiana Democrats Are
Concerned About Stretching National Guard
Troops Too
Thin
BATON ROUGE—
Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Chris
Whittington released the following
statement today in response to President George
W. Bush’s national address on
immigration:
“Illegal
immigration remains a complex problem that
demands a comprehensive
solution.
President Bush’s
support for a bipartisan effort to control
illegal immigration is a welcome
overture; however, it amounts to mostly empty
rhetoric. His decision
to use National Guard troops
to patrol our borders is nothing more than a
stop-gap effort and will not
solve the underlying problem.
Taking National Guard soldiers from
around the country and placing on
our borders, will remove them from their home
states where they are
desperately needed.
Our National
Guard troops have courageously protected our
nation in the face of wars
overseas and natural disasters here at
home. During Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita, Louisiana National
Guard members risked their lives, often after
experiencing great personal
loss, to save others. With the
2006 hurricane season looming before us, we
need every asset, including our
brave National Guard troops, available and
ready to respond to any storm-
related emergency.
Border
security alone will not solve the problem of
illegal immigration, we must also
deal with the many undocumented workers who
already live and work inside the
United States. Most of these
illegal immigrants are honest people who work
hard for very little money,
provide for their children, and practice their
faith. These individuals
deserve the opportunity to earn
their citizenship and fully participate in the
American
Dream.”
