Louisiana Democrats launch Petition to Defund David Vitter
Wednesday, September 23, 2009
Today, the Louisiana Democratic Party launched
an online petition calling for legislation to
prohibit public funds from going to U.S.
Senator David Vitter. The petition has been
posted on the Party's blog, Doing a
Vitter.
The Defund Vitter petition
calls on the U.S. Congress to pass a resolution
acknowledging Vitter's criminal past,
ineffective legislative record and history of
political grandstanding. The resolution
concludes that David Vitter should be
prohibited from receiving federal funds.
"David Vitter says he wants to make
sure federal money doesn't go to people who
break the law and the Louisiana Democratic
Party agrees," said spokesman Kevin
Franck. "It's time to defund David
Vitter."
The full text of the
petition is below:
We, the undersigned,
hereby call on the U.S. Congress to
immediately* pass the following resolution to
defund David
Vitter:
RESOLUTION
Prohibiting
the use of federal funds to support David
Vitter
Whereas David Vitter has
admitted engaging in criminal activity while in
public office;
Whereas David Vitter has
used taxpayer-funded government facilities to
engage in criminal activity;
Whereas
David Vitter has been the subject of repeated
criminal and civil investigations by federal
and local law enforcement;
Whereas David
Vitter is currently ranked 85th in
effectiveness in the U.S. Senate and has no
significant legislative
accomplishments;
Whereas David Vitter
appears driven more by a desire to score
political points than enact legislation that
would benefit the people of
Louisiana;
Whereas Louisiana taxpayers
should not be forced to fund David Vitter's
criminal activity or partisan political
grandstanding;
Resolved, that it is the
sense of the U.S Congress that all federal
funding of David Vitter should be
prohibited.
* By 'immediately,' we, the
undersigned, mean that Congress should pass
legislation to defund David Vitter after the
economy is back on track, our health care
system has been fixed, the wars in Afghanistan
and Iraq have been brought to responsible
conclusions, our country is safe from terrorist
attack, all American children have the
opportunity to attend quality public schools
and all other pressing national problems have
been resolved. Further, we, the undersigned,
acknowledge that Congress has much better
things to do with its time than pass narrow
pieces of legislation that serve only partisan
political ends. Just in case Congress does not
get around to passing this resolution in the
next year, we, the undersigned, pledge to do
our best to defund David Vitter at the ballot
box.
