The Jindal Curse
Monday, August 31, 2009
On Saturday, Democrat Norby Chabert soundly
defeated Republican Brent Callais in the
special election to fill the open state Senate
seat in the 20th district.
Chabert received 54.3 percent of
the 17,626 votes cast Saturday. Callais
received only 45.7 percent.
The
Louisiana Republican Party spent tens of
thousands of dollars on the campaign, focusing
their efforts on trying to link Chabert to the
President of the United States.
“Once again, the Republican
strategy of smear and fear has been soundly
rejected by voters,” said Chris Whittington,
chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party.
Saturday's race was the latest in
which a local candidate supported by Governor
Bobby Jindal and Louisiana Republicans was
defeated at the ballot box.
Gov.
Bobby Jindal formally endorsed Callais and
hosted a fundraiser for him at Port Fourchon on
Aug. 24. Earlier this year, Jindal endorsed
Republican businessman Lee Domingue in his
failed campaign for a state Senate seat in
Baton Rouge. Domingue garnered a slim 34
percent of the vote.
Last year,
Jindal endorsed Republican Treasurer John
Kennedy in the U.S. Senate race against Sen.
Mary Landrieu, who beat Kennedy 52 percent to
46 percent.
"Brent Callais is just
the latest candidate to succumb to the Jindal
Curse," Whittington
said.
