WHEN HURRICANE IKE WAS HEADED FOR HIS DISTRICT, BOUSTANY VOTED TO STAY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Republican 7th district congressman puts partisan politics over the needs of his constituents

Last Friday, Hurricane Ike was bearing down on Louisiana and Texas, and residents of Vermilion, Cameron and Calcasieu parishes were evacuating in advance of Ike’s dangerous winds and storm surge.

What did 7th District Republican Congressman Charles Boustany do as his constituents faced imminent danger? He voted to stay in Washington, D.C. (See link: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll588.xml)

“This is just the latest example of Boustany voting lockstep with his party and ignoring the needs of his constituents,” says Louisiana Democratic Party Executive Director Britton Loftin. “Whether it’s voting against expanding health care for Louisiana children or refusing to help local agencies secure federal funding for vital projects, Boustany consistently refuses to serve his constituents. Abandoning the people of the 7th district as they faced down Hurricane Ike is a new low.”

Boustany has not commented on why he felt it was so vital to stay in Washington, D.C. at a time when his constituents needed him most.
